Tojima Wants to be a Kamen Rider (Spider and Bat Transformations)

Our thanks to T-Ace Juice for recommending this anime on our Discord server. The show features two "Shocker monster" villains, who can transform from human to anthropoid animal forms. The first is Su Kumota, aka "Spider-Man."

This clip collects his human-to-arachnid transformations in episodes 3 and 5. (Note: Dailymotion doesn't allow me to disable autostart anymore, but you can do so by adjusting your browser settings.):

The Orville (Arachnid/Alien Transformation)

Thanks to MrTF for finding this scene from The Orville (season 3, episode 2). A member of the spaceship crew gets ambushed by an "arachnid," a spider-like alien, and transforms into one:

This horror anthology from Marvel comics starts with Werewolf by Night entering a mansion, where he transforms after encountering a werewolf butler (art by Geoff Shaw):

Marvel's Spider-Man (Spider Transformations)

Spider-Man recently spent five episodes on a loose adaptation of the comics story "Spider-Island" (covered in an earlier post), which involved everyone in Manhattan gaining Spider-powers and then  transforming into human-sized spiders. The transformation scenes weren't as great as I hoped, but they're nothing to sneeze at either.

On to the first clip. The first part is from episode 19 ("Spider-Island Part 1"). Norman Osborne has stolen Spider-Man's stealth suit and is busy battling Spidey and his friends until he transforms into a man-spider. The remainder of the clip is taken from episode 22 ("Spider-Island Part 4") and shows Osborn being injected with a cure. He partially reverts offscreen, and reverts entirely after the full cure is injected.




Now for the second clip. The first scene is taken from episode 22 and shows some quick spider TFs. The scenes afterward are from episode 23 ("Spider-Island Part 5") and show various spider monsters reverted to human form:

Amazing Spider-Man (Spider Transformations)

Spider Island (Spider Transformations)

Spider Island was a Marvel comics crossover that primarily ran in the Spider-Man titles. The premise involved the residents of Manhattan developing the same powers as Spider-Man. Their excitement proved short-lived when shortly afterward began turning into man-spiders. Almost everyone in Manhattan was afflicted by the transformation.

The fun really starts in Cloak & Dagger, issue 2. Dagger is busy studying political science with her friend Patrick when he begins feeling weird...

We move on to Amazing Spider-Man 670, which shows Spidey's boss J. Jonah Jameson succumbing to spiderhood:

In Heroes For Hire issue 1, we see a minor-league hero named Paladin mutate throughout the comic:

Lastly, we witness the transformation and reversion of Shang-Chi, star of The Deadly Hands of Kung Fu. The first three images are from issue 2; the rest are from #3. The images are taken from various parts of the story, so they will feel disjointed. To avoid confusion, I should also point out that in several images, Shang-Chi is fighting a villain who has the bottom half of spider.

Spectacular Spider-Man (Spider Transformation)

I'm not a Marvel fan, but I love it when Spider-Man turns into a Man-Spider. Unfortunately, that happen rarely (though it's happened twice in the cartoons). In Spectacular Spider-Man 17-20 the transformation gradually happens over the course of four issues.

Spider-Man encounters the Queen, an insect-human hybrid who had kissed him earlier and triggered his mutation. The Queen is on the hunt for a "husband" and likes what she sees:

The Queen carrys him off. Sadly, we don't see Spider-Man's transformation into this:

Now for the final issue:

The Queen spends some quality time with her new husband, until he gets sick:

The spider  collapses and is pronounced dead. Then this happens:

Yes, he can now shoot spider jizz webs from his hands! Congratulations, but you were prettier with eight eyes. As far as I know, this was the last comic where Spidey got in touch with his inner arachnid. If you know of another one published in the last decade, drop me a line.

Ultimate Spider-Man: Web Warriors (Spider Transformation)

A scene from episode 7 of the third season, when Spider-Man travels to the Savage Land and gets infected by a poison that transforms him into a man-spider (hence the episode title "The Savage Spider-Man"):




This isn't the first time Spider-Man became a man-spider (the idea seems like a natural one). It happened in the comics around 10 years ago (I'll post scans in a future update) and in the Spider-Man cartoon from the 1990s. Here's the transformation, along with the reversion, which is more detailed. The 90s show has a better man-spider design, but the new show has a better transformation.
