Red: Werewolf Hunter

Red is a made-for-TV movie that will be airing on the SyFy channel on Oct. 30th. It's about a werewolf hunter whose fiancé (the very fine-looking Kavan Smith) contracts lycanthropy, and like most SyFy movies it's made on the cheap. You can see a new preview here. The werewolf designs look fine, but since this is SyFy, they're all in cheap CGI, so even we get a detailed TF scene it'll probably have that too-smooth, synthetic morphing look. Computer graphics on a  television budget simply can't give a real impression of transforming flesh--there's no real weight or texture to the images. Still, I wouldn't mind being proved wrong, so let's see what happens...

POST-SCRIPT: I was proved right, but not entirely. As I guessed, the transformations were in weightless CGI, but they were better than expected. Still, it'll be a while before computer graphics will ever suggest the same  weight and sensual, tactile quality as animatronics and prosthetics. There were three transformations of note, and a youtuber named weremaster1989 recorded all three of them. You can watch them here, here, and here.

Werewolf! (Indie comic series)

Hey kids, do you like indie comic? Do you like good indie comics? Do you like good indie comics about werewolves? You're in luck! Werewolves! is a two (soon to be three) issue anthology of lycanthrope-related comic vignettes. I own and can heartily recommend the extant issues, which you can buy here. Plus, you can see a comic from the upcoming third issue, which (naturally) features a dude wolfing out during the full moon.

Naruto (Weretiger Transformation)

Naruto is one of those corny animes that everyone under 16 is crazy about. Kids these days...

Anyway, episode 146 of this silly show features a character called Mizuki who transforms into a sort of tiger man. You can watch it on this very blog. (My thanks to the guys at the Musclegrowth.org forum, where I first learned of this video.)

One of the recent Shin-Chan movies (Crayon Shin-chan: Roar! Kasukabe Animal Kingdom) revolves around people being turned into animals. Alas, most of the TFs are of the flash-of-light variety (almost as annoying as "poof" TFs, and definitely near the bottom on the lousy TF scale). There was one semi-bright spot when the villain changed into a lion-beast thingy with wings--not because of the animal bit (flash-of-light again!) but because of a few seconds of muscle growth. The TF begins at the 1:24:45 mark here.

Melonpool (Chimpanzee Transformation)

Here is an ape TF from an old page of the webcomic Melonpool. For some reason, detailed chimp TFs are not very common.

Archipelago (Wereshark Transformation)

The webcomic Archipelago recently featured a neat wereshark transformation. It starts here.

Sorcery 101 (Werewolf Transformation)

Several main characters in this long-running webcomic are werewolves. One of the younger ones undergoes a transformation that starts here.
Werewolves feature in two other comics from the same artist. There is a reversion in Strange Someone and a quick transformation in Bisclavret (based on the classic medieval werewolf story by Marie de France).

Howling Brat (Werewolf Transformation)

Monsterhood (Werewolf Transformation)

In this webcomic the hero is transported to a monsters-only town, and fools the populace into thinking he's a werewolf. But when he's invited to an event under the full moon, he has to drink a potion to turn himself into the real thing...as seen here.

Ugly Americans (Werewolf Transformation)

The new animated series Ugly Americans recently featured some lycanthropes in its second episode, "An American Werewolf in America." A guy gets attacked and slowly goes lycan throughout the episode. There are only two actual scenes of actual transformation, but every time the character appears we see him further changed. I've cut together all the good werewolf scenes into one video, featured below. Enjoy!

Tarot Cafe Vol.2 (Werewolf Transformation)

The manwha (Korean manga) Tarot Cafe features a werewolf character in its second volume. We first see him going from werewolf to human here, followed much later by a one panel TF. If this character appears in later volumes please let me know.

There's also a female TF for those who like that sort of thing...

Wizards of Waverly Place (Werewolf Transformation)

This is not the first werewolf to appear in this Disney show--in an earlier episode the brother of the main wizardess was transformed into one, but alas, there was no onscreen TF (damn it!). That oversight is made up for here, since the cute boyfriend character goes through a two-part transformation. The computer morphing isn't bad, but one regrets the lack of muscle growth or clothes-ripping.

Eerie Cuties (Werewolf Transformation)

The webcomic Eerie Cuties features a werewolf as one of its main cast members, as you can see here. He undergoes a reversion later on, followed by lengthier transformation and a short one.

Chocolate Milkmaid (Demon Transformation)

Another NSFW webcomic from the WLP stable. A young man and his girlfriend drink an experimental formula, and tentacle p0rn ensues. Start reading here.

Batman: The Brave and the Bold: Return of the Fearsome Fangs! (Animal Transformations)

Last week's episode featured The Terrific Trio (Fox, Shark and Vulture) and Batman and Bronze Tiger all transforming into their namesake animals. The TFs are fast and fluid. Fortunately for us, that renown transformation devotee TFFurryMaster has put up a special video containing just the TF scenes. You can view it here.

This episode marks the third time The Trio has shown up in animation, and the second time they've transformed into animals. The previous occasion was an episode of The Batman titled "Attack of the Terrible Trio." Unfortunately the episode was a bit of a wasted opportunity, since the trio didn't have any decent TF scenes--instead the animators cheated by just showing their shadows transforming (that old cheap trick!).
But the episode did feature a nice scene of a frat stud reverting back into a human after having been turned into a raging gorrilla--you can see him de-Kong here. The episode also features Fox getting a mutagen overdose and turning into--of all things!--a griffon. This has to be the silliest coincidence ever--who knew the chances of bathing in a stew of random animal DNA and coming out as a mythological creature were so high? Still, it's not a bad tf and can be viewed here.

Choking Dolphins (Werewolf Transformation)

While trawling around I found a humorous werewolf transformation in this webcomic. The TF starts here.

Sonic: Night of the Werehog (Monster Transformation)

I get bothered when people call Sonic a "werehog". "Were" means "man"--a real werehog is a man who transforms into a hog. Sonic is already a hedgehog--all his transformation involves is growing claws and extra muscles and fur. Anyway, here's an animated short Sega put together to promote the new video game, called "Night of the Werehog." There's no time counter, but I can say that the TF is in the final third of the film. Werepig (Pig Transformation)

Here's a Spanish claymation short about two boorish American tourists who come to a squealing end. The (anti-)American jokes are rather heavy-handed, but the claymation is very well done.

Batman: The Brave and the Bold (Animal Transformations)

I'm a bit late in posting this one (which is especially galling since I was aware of this TF a week before it aired), but here's an ape transformation from the "Terror on Dinosaur Island" episode of Batman: The Brave and the Bold. The villain Gorilla Grodd is attempting to transform men into gorillas, but his first victim doesn't make it all the way into gorilla-hood. It's really more of a muscle-expansion/clothes bursting transformation than an animal one, but that's all the TF we get. Watch it here. TF begins at the 03:39 mark. Here's hoping this show airs as many transformations as Batman: the Animated Series, the landmark cartoon that proved Americans could match the Japanese.

Seto no Hanayome 11 (Growth Transformations)

Here's a fun-looking anime whose central character turns into a giant in episode 11, complete with ripping clothes and no magic pants (thank God!). If anyone knows if this guy has any animal TFs in the other episodes, please let me know.

This anime just had a two-parter chock-full of werewolfy goodness!

Last Sunday the SciFi channel aired a new made-for-TV movie, Never Cry Werewolf. Though the budget was too low to allow for top-notch transformations (they even resorted to the old trick of cutting to the reaction of a horrified onlooker during the TF scene), we got the beginnings of two werewolf transformations.

There wasn't a single mention of Never Cry Werewolf on metamorphose.org, which has become almost useless to anyone who's interested in more than TG transformations (why don't they just rename the place transgendertf.org?). I actually raised this complaint on the site's board, only to be told that there wasn't many animal TFs around to take notice of. I think the truth is that there's plenty and it's being ignored.

Back to the movie:
Some folks have complained that Cry is just a rip-off of Fright Night, and there's no denying how derivative it is of the latter's plot. But I prefer to view Cry as a variation or inspired remake of FN, because it gets an awful lot of thematic mileage out of its variations. Here the evil neighbor is an attractive male werwolf who lusts after the heroine, who's surrounded by males who are either threatening or ineffectual. The threat is not merely physical but sexual too. That's emphasized by having both of the men attracted to her turning into werewolves. And as the villainous werewolf neighbor, Peter Stebbings turns in a good, seethingly sexual performance--you can understand why the heroine would be attracted to his animal charisma against her will.

Oh, as for the other werewolf, he's played by Sean O'Neil, who is younger and cuter than Stebbings. Unfortunately, after a promising-looking beginning to his transformation, he turns into a freakish bug-eyed mutant thing who has very little resemblance to any lycanthrope I've seen. Still, the fragments of TF scenes that we have are enough to tide me over, and for once we got a werewolf film with two cute guys transforming in it!
